In his role with the CSIR, Cornelius is responsible for research, development, and innovation in the areas of coastal, marine, and port engineering; building sciences and technology; planning systems and support; transport systems and operations; transport pavement engineering; and water infrastructure engineering and operations. Prior to joining CSIR, he served as Deputy Director-General of National Water Resources Infrastructure for the Department of Water Affairs. Despite gathering a considerable amount of his expertise through his vast professional experience, Cornelius is also a highly educated individual who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Life and Biological Sciences, Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences and Statistics, Master of Science degree in Life Science and Statistics, and a PhD in Life Sciences and Statistics from the University of the Western Cape. Additionally, he earned a Graduate Diploma and a Master of Engineering degree in Water and Environmental Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of South Africa. Evidencing his remarkable reputation in the professional community, Cornelius is a member of the Water Institute of Southern Africa and the South African Natural Sciences Professional Council. Further demonstrating his proficiency in the field, he was the recipient of a Mellon Foundation Scholarship; Shell Scholarship/Prize for Mathematics; Ford Foundation Scholarship; International Education Foundation Scholarship for PhD studies research at San Diego State University; National Research Foundation Scholarship; Desmond Tutu Educational Trust Scholarship; and a Kagiso Trust Scholarship.
