The International Association of Healthcare Professionals has carefully selected Martin M. Malawer, MD, to represent oncologic orthopedic surgery in their publication, The Leading Physicians of the World. Dr. Malawer’s selection is a significant representation of his passion and dedication for the field of oncologic orthopedic surgery. He is considered to be among the best among his many years in practice. Dr. Malawer is the Founder and Medical Director of the Washington Musculoskeletal Tumor Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Malawer specializes in treating sarcomas, or tumors of the bone, muscle, and connective tissue. For this reason, he is often referred to as an orthopedic oncologic surgeon. He is author of than 92 publications and 85 textbook chapters, as well as co-editor of Musculoskeletal Surgery for Cancer: Treatment of Sarcomas and Allied Diseases. Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at George Washington University-School of Medicine, he also teaches at Georgetown University School of Medicine. In 1969, Dr. Malawer received his medical degree from New York University-School of Medicine. He then went on to complete an orthopedic residency at Bellevue Medical Center, then a fellowship in orthopedic oncology with Dr. William F. Enneking at the University of Florida. Involved with the training of surgeons all around the world, Dr. Malawer is considered to be one of the founding voices of orthopedic oncology, the merging together of two different specialties. Noted for treating bony defects, Dr. Malawer is also a major inventor and co-developer of a system of bone and joint implants for the reconstruction following cancer surgery for the upper and lower extremities in order to avoid amputations.
