Press Release: Fairfield County Doctor on Eye Exams to Prevent Vision Loss from Diabetic Eye Problems
Fairfield County Ophthalmologist Leslie Doctor, M.D. shared ways to help prevent vision loss from diabetic eye problems-such as diabetic retinopathy- through compliance with recommended guidelines for having a dilated eye exam each year as well as consciously making healthy lifestyle choices. “There is a real problem with the increase in the number of people with diabetes in the U.S., and it is of epidemic proportions,” stated Dr. Leslie Doctor. “Data from the Centers for Disease Control and the Prevent Blindness America Vision Problems in the U.S. report indicate that some 26 million people in the United States suffer from diabetes of which almost 8 million people ages 40 and older have diabetic retinopathy. This represents an 89 percent increase in incidence between the years 2000-2012 and even more importantly, diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults 20-74 years of age,” she said.
November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month. As with many eye diseases-and especially with diabetic retinopathy-the key to preventing vision loss is early detection, diagnosis and treatment when necessary. Annual dilated eye exams can help to prevent the vision loss from diabetic retinopathy, yet more than one third of those diagnosed with diabetes do not adhere to vision care guidelines recommending a dilated eye exam every year.
“Further, healthy lifestyle choices can be beneficial in decreasing the risk of developing diabetic eye disease. Not starting, or stopping smoking, controlling cholesterol, lipids and blood pressure, eating a heart-healthy diet rich in fish, fruit and green leafy vegetables and exercising can all go a long way to help preventing vision from diabetes ,” advised Dr. Leslie Doctor.
