Chinese Ask Kerry To Help Tear Down A Firewall
A group of Chinese bloggers asked the United States to take up the cause of Internet freedom in an unusual meeting on Saturday with Secretary of State John Kerry. One by one, the bloggers voiced concerns to US Secretary of State John Kerry that the ability of Chinese citizens to gain access to information was under siege and that the country’s prospects for becoming a democracy were uncertain at best. Seeking to reassure the bloggers, Mr. Kerry, who arrived in Beijing on Friday, said that human rights were a perennial issue in his meetings with Chinese officials and that he had repeatedly taken up the cause of press and religious freedom, adding, “Obviously, we think that the Chinese economy will be stronger with greater freedom of the Internet.”
