Facebook’s $19.5 billion buyout of online messaging service WhatsApp is the latest punctuation of what’s shaping up to be a blockbuster year for tech dealmaking. Thomson Reuters says, technology merger and acquisition activity has reached $42.4 billion so far this year, the best start to a year for dealmaking in the industry since the tech dot-com boom of 2000. Facebook’s buy of WhatsApp, the eight largest U.S. tech deal, shows the land grab between Internet titans to grow quickly or risk being left behind.
