LIGHTNING RELEASES 03/17/14 — Cliffside Park, NJ – As we’ve moved toward a more collaborative, cross-cultural economy, relationship dynamics in the workplace have grown ever more fraught with complexity. Each employee brings their culture, their family history and their relationships to work each day and this can often lead to stress and conflict.

But with industry regulatory standards increasingly becoming the norm, the responsibility for an organization’s success or failure has been placed squarely on employees. The more we can limit the things that prevent organizations from being effective and encourage the things that support its objectives, the better the outcomes.

Dr. Mariesa Julien is an organizational psychologist and founder of Compliant Quality Systems, a unique business consulting firm specializing in helping companies improve their operational efficiency and organizational culture.

“Core values are great, but they’re not skills,” explains Dr. Julien. “You need both in order to effectively support the overall objectives of an organization.

Organizational psychology is the scientific study of human behavior in the workplace and organizations, and for the past 15 years, Dr. Julien has brought her unique approach to understanding the relationship between functional and job skills, operational transparency, and interpersonal skills creating a synchronized system. 

“You have to understand and respect how everything impacts everything else,” says Dr. Julien. “The dynamics of relationships in terms of how people communicate, the things that impact our feelings like safety and belonging and feeling valued are part of this. And that’s true for companies, communities and even families.”

Dr. Julien typically collaborates with organizations looking to create a documented infrastructure to meets certain industry regulatory requirements and to illustrate the way the business works. The objective is to develop a system where operations are clean and transparent, employees know what they’re responsible for and how they’re evaluated.  Both operation’s and management’s roles are clearly defined.

“When I first meet with their organization, most of my clients don’t even know about my psychology and systems background,” says Dr. Julien. “We start with regulatory compliance because that’s comfortable for organizations, but very often in the process we discover there are a lot of relationship dynamics that contribute.”

It’s Dr. Julien’s goal is to foster a sense of collaboration among divergent interests within an organization. Businesses, like families, are ultimately functional relationships. People need to support each other, enable each other, empower each other, educate each other and everyone has a role to play.

“If you can build a really effective working relationship with people around you, you can see the relationship dynamics of other environments, things you might do to support change in your own family.”
