NFL Racial Slur Ruling May Force Change
The US Patent and Trademark Office cancelled 6 federal trademark registrations of The NFL’s Washington Redskins, saying the name and logo were “disparaging to Native Americans.” The decision does not mean that Washington must change their name and logo but that they no longer control exclusive rights to them. The team’s attorney said Washington will appeal the decision. If the decision stands, others will be able to use the name and logos without compensation to the NFL and the team, which will essentially force them to make a change. Additionally, the NFL will likely support the change as they do not want to sully the league’s trademark, which appears adjacent to the team’s racist marks.
