From seemingly out of nowhere, the Kansas City Royals have taken over first place in the American League Central. The Royals were a popular pick in the national media to be a playoff contender, but after a 14-11 April, the team went 12-17 in May. During that period of time, they fired their hitting coach–and demoted and re-promoted third baseman Mike Moustakas. Entering Wednesday, the Royals had gone 12-3 in June to take a half game lead over the Detroit Tigers.
