Dow Tops 17,000 After Strong Jobs Report
A strong jobs report pushed up the stock market higher Thursday, with the Dow Jones industrial average crossing 17,000 for the first time. The Department of Labor said employers added 288,000 workers last month, and the unemployment rate fell to 6.1 percent. The Dow rose 69 points, or 0.4 percent, to 17,044 as of 9:50 a.m. PetSmart, the pet supply chain, rose $7.88, or 13 percent, to $67.75 in early trading.
