After a generation of extensive youth soccer participation, hosting a World Cup, and modest success in a few of the tournaments, interest in professional soccer has expanded over the last from a purely cult following to a recognizable brand. Attendance per game at MLS games has grown to just under 20,000, which puts its slightly higher than the NBA or NHL. In spite of its growth over the past 20 years, the seasonal-World-Cup-oriented nature to the demand in the U.S. suggests that MLS may still face a steep uphill battle for fans from this point forward.
