Celebrate Central Park’s 161st Birthday
When cramped apartments, metal skyscrapers and concrete sidewalks brimming with tourists becomes too much for New Yorkers, they follow a 160-year-old tradition and seek refuge in the city’s greatest asset — Central Park. The New York State Legislature set aside more than 750 acres of land on the island of Manhattan on Jul 21, 1853, creating America’s first major landscaped public park. The park has since been extended to 843 acres. The park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux after winning a design competition, inspired an urban park movement and has improved the well being of New Yorkers ever since its grand opening, providing a rural haven in the center of a bustling city.
