Japan’s Rakuten Buys Startup As It Mulls U.S. Entry
Rakuten, Japan’s largest online retailer, has bought Slice, a U.S. based e-commerce app, as it plans a possible foray into the U.S. Slice mines users’ e-mail in-boxes for receipts from Amazon, Nordstrom and other e-commerce sites to consolidate their purchase history, send alerts about package shipments and monitor price changes to help users obtain subsequent rebates. Slice’s Chief Executive Scott Brady said, the company, with about 70 employees, charges a fee to websites to use its software and access some customer data.
