Mireia Belmonte Garcia claimed gold for Spain with a continental record in the women’s 1,500-meter freestyle at the European swimming championship on Saturday. Belmonte won in 15 minutes, 57.29 seconds, ahead of Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas in 16:03.04 and Italy’s Martina Rita Caramignoli in 16:05.98. Adam Peaty won the men’s 50 breaststroke after setting a world record of 26.62 seconds in his semifinal heat the day before.
