The New York Yankees have retired four-time World Series champion manager Joe Torre’s No. 6. Torre unveiled his number alongside those of 16 other retired numbers in Monument Park on Saturday at the start of a ceremony honoring the recently inducted Hall of Famer. The Yankees later revealed a plaque to be placed in the area beyond the center field wall. With a sense of calm and familial congeniality, Torre led New York to 12 straight playoff appearances during his tenure under combative owner George Steinbrenner, including three more championships from 1998-2000. He was 1,173-767-2 in the regular season with the Yankees and was inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame this July.
