Keeping your seatbelt on while seated on an airplane may seem like an unnecessary inconvenience, but there’s a reason for that precaution, as the crew and passengers on an easyJet flight from Gatwick to Naples learned on Monday. According to a passenger, Flight 8529 hit an air pocket, causing such severe turbulence that three flight crew members’ heads hit the plane’s roof, while one broke a hip and another was knocked unconscious.
