Business News: Ron Paul: Bank-Connected Democrat Mel Watt Strips H.R. 1207 of Almost Everything
With most Americans outraged over the behavior of the Federal Reserve and the part it has played in the bailouts of huge institutions in the financial and automotive industries, Ron Paul introduced H.R. 1207, which would have required a full audit of the Federal Reserve and its activities, which crosses international lines.
According to Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, the House Financial Service Committee’s panel on domestic monetary policy, Rep. Mel Watt, D-N.C., essentially stripped the bill of just about everything that would have required transparency, and pretty much is now worthless as to its original purpose of letting the American people and Congress see what their secretive dealings have entailed.
After Watt got hold of the bill, it no longer includes the communications reports between the reserve banks and its various workers, and also the Board. What was especially wanted to be seen was what types of deals were made with foreign central banks and how recent bailout money was spent and what banks received it and how much. Paul asserts those loopholes, which had been closed in the original language of the bill, are now reopened.
Citing a telephone interview with Paul, Bloomberg reported Paul said about the revised bill: “There’s nothing left; it’s been gutted. This is not a partisan issue. People all over the country want to know what the Fed is up to, and this legislation was supposed to help them do that.”
Especially troubling about the gutting of the bill is the connections the Democrat Watt has with the banking industry. Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) has its headquarters in his congressional district, which is based in Charlotte, but worse, the majority of contributions to Watt’s campaign has come from corporations in the real estate, finance and insurance industry.
Watt’s largest contributors included American Express (NYSE: AXP), Wachovia, Bank of America and the American Bankers Association. Altogether the financial industry donated over $217,109 to Watt, which was over 35 percent of the overall contributions he received.
Paul’s bill had widespread support, with over 300 co-sponsors in the house. Per Bloomberg, Paul says he plans on introducing an amendment to the bill which would bring it back to the original language it included at the time it comes to the floor of the House to be voted on.

Our federal government has spit on our nation's founders and trampled our Constitution.
They just don't care about America and Americans anymore, other than to generate wealth for them and die in foreign countries to show the world that we're still in charge. We should be ashamed for continuing to buy into their lies election after election, both leftists and rightists. Our Constitution is NEITHER leftist OR rightist.
this was a given.
soon, it will be time to unleash the anger.
This is BS. The Fed is rotten to the core and NEEDS TO BE AUDITED TO PUT US ON SOME KIND OF SOLID FOUNDATION! Can the Resolution be fixed? This is important — this is more important than anything aside from getting US troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan.
The actions of Representative Mel Watt are a disgrace. The citizens of this nation deserve, and desperately need to have full and complete transparency regarding the actions of the Federal Reserve. The FED is owned and run by private banks and bankers, and they benefit at the expense of the taxpayers. Reasonable rules for disclosure can be written, but to simply gut the provisions and preserve the power, influence, and most importantly the secrecy of the Federal Reserve’s actions in unconscionable. All American patriots need to contact the members of the House Financial Services Committee and Representative Mel Watt and make it clear he will be held accountable for his betrayal of the American people in his next primary or general election if he does not alter his position and restore the provisions in the original version of HR 1207.
Hope to see Mel Watts flipping burgers soon….
Are all residents of North Carolina as stupid as their “representative?” If not, why do they tolerate Watt's behavior? All good Christians would do well to remember that usury is a sin. Lending or borrowing with interest is immoral. Deuteronomy 23:19 “Thou shall not lend upon usury to they brother.” You can't have it both ways. Watt is shielding the usury industry. Who is the “evil-monger” now? If we cannot count the money, how are we ever going to budget for health care? EVERYthing runs on this funny money. Time to pull the cloak off the reaper's head.
Hugely dissapoinitng…..
The constitution is DEAD…..D.E.A.D!!!!!
There is no way that a social change at the core is not coming……a fundamental structural change in people's mindsets is getting closer…..you cannot consistently betray and deceive and corrupt the people and their not be consequences….
join a grass-roots movements….join the militia is you feel inclined….People like Mel watt are tainted and useless rubbish….morally and ethically corrupt…..puppets of the elite and by very definition, enemies of the people
SOMETHING ROTTEN IN DENMARK?? SURE THERE IS….WE'VE KNOWN IT FOR MANY YEARS NOW. SO WHAT ARE WE DECENT AMERICANS GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?
Mel Watt = bank-owned puppet.
The problem few here realize is how safe Mr. Watt is in his district. The 12th is a gerrymandered district that really shouldn't be the shape it is. Its very existence has been challenged before as it's clear to native North Carolinians that district is the way it is for one reason only. Mel Watt is a useless politician however he will never be removed. There is no hope for a conservative, Republican or Democrat, to win that district.
I expected a well funded from the banking industry politician to strip this bill, although sort of surprised me it was Mr. Watt
Mell Watt, a shame to America and all of humanity. Sells out his country and his soul. I beg and plead for the gerrymandered district that he represents to vote him out ASAP for the sake of their children and children's children.
Why is democracy a group effort until one douche bag gets his hands on things and screws everything over for everyone?
Wow, the comments here are unanimously trumpeting displeasure with Watt's actions. Beautiful. There is still hope for America.
Mel Watt is a traitor to the American People. We must never forget this or anyone who chooses the FED over the citizens of the United States.
Restore the Republic! Restore the Constitution! Enough is enough!
There has to be another man or woman of his color in that gerrymandered district that doesn't like him. Even if they're totally liberal we should recruit someone then put our time and money into them.
call him and ask him why he sides with the banks rather then the people – i think we will be tarring and feathering an effigy of him this weekend if there's enough tar left over from Rangel!!! this is crazy that he spits in the face of 308 co-sponsors of this bill….
I have friends in Charlotte. I've gotten them to write and call Mel Watt's office and demand action. Remember when Ralph Nader asked if Obama would be Uncle Sam for the people or Uncle Tom for the bankers? Well Mel Watt is an Uncle Tom. It's just shameful that this man has been elected time and again to Congress. Please, wake up, America. Don't trust this man
Can someone please explain to me what gives Mel Watt the authority to single-handedly (or does it just SEEM that way?) revise this bill? How did this one man become endowed with the power to do this, and who is it that declared it should be so? I would like very much to know.
Mel Watt is America's JUDAS!
It Blatantly Obvious that Congressman Mel Watt is Bought and paid for by the FEDERAL RESERVE and Banking Cabal.
BofA?
Wells Fargo Wachovia?
American Bankers Association?
Why are these CRIMINALS not indicted for Felony, Fraud, Collusion, Conspiracy, and RICO laws?

I am from Sweden but still follow closley what develops in US regarding monetary policy and the monterary system itself for som key reasons:
– it scares the shit out of me to see how the US average citizen gets ripped by the monterary system over time, driven from the root of unsound money and controlled by big-banking interests
– the dollar status as word reserve currency is indeed shaky since the FED is debasing the currency so heavlily now, and has been doing so over a long-long time inflating the economy in a never expanding credit expansion (that only serve to put most american property and tangible assets as collateral for interest bearing loans and bonanza banking profits). If and when the dollar loose its reserve status it will be alot of pain across the globe, but it is inevitable to happen I beleive. Current monteray model and olicy in US is so unhealthy
– it scares me to think of all economy pullbacks that was needed to correct bubbles and mailinvestments but never allowed to play out by the governement and the FED, using too loose monetary policys too long. All it does is push the inevitable effect forward to next generations but time is indeed running up now, can't go below zero rate – only print more money and pile more debth that may never be posssible to serve or pay back. The looser: US citizens and all that hold US Treasuty debth
– I think this time around we are at crossroads and the economy will not “come back to normal” anytime soon, the PE ratios on the stock markets are ridicilous and only reason they are without falling down like stones is the delution of the dollarbase, real assets must go up when the base is diluted and the anticipation of the future is also priced in, Gold in dollar is the vote of confidence, just look at it !
– I want to preserve the little wealth I have, even living in a remote small country it is essential to understand global marco economy, monterary policy and especially the US/FED (mis)management of the dollar.
– I am afraid that we will see alot of unexpected and disturbing events globally before all this is over, if we all are lucky then the banking-Washington-FED pact will break (at least in part) and a (modern) version of sound money will be restored, not just in US – remeber, we all got hit by US/Nixon closing the gold window back in the 70, placing us all on a fiat base indirectly since we all where pegged to the dollar. scary !
Therefore I truly appreciate to people like Ron Paul speak up, he is a rock-solid force of morality and consistency pointing at exactly the right issues, over a long time also. There are too few of that type of politicians around, regardless of what camp they come from.
I hope Dr. Pauls HR1207 eventually pass, or pass through the system long enough to really surface the much needed debate that the Washington-BigBanking-FED will try so hard to bury through people like Watts and all sort of tricks.
if you are mad about mel watts' position then you should be furious at obama
Mel Watt's attempt to gut the most important parts of Ron Paul's bill has been rejected by the committee 42-26 to put the good stuff back in!!! woo hoo!!..so I wonder what their next trick will be.
