Wells Fargo & Co (NYSE: WFC) is now giving some of its customers a new paperless options for ATM receipts.

The company said today that it has begun giving customers an option to have their ATM receipt sent directly to their e-mail inbox or to a secure Wells Fargo online account inbox. Users can choose the option at the end of their transaction. The e-mail will include an image of the transaction receipt.

The San Francisco-based bank rolled out the change to its customers in San Francisco last week and will likely roll the feature out nationwide. Jonathan Velline, Wells Fargo’s head of ATM banking, said that about 8% of users have already started requesting receipts via e-mail.

Velline said that the move to e-mail fits the technology-driven lifestyle of many of its consumers and provides environmental benefits by reducing paper usage. Velline also commented that the move helps prevent litter around the banks.

“Customers are used to online and mobile banking to track their finances so figuring out ways to move the ATM channel into the way they’re working is important,” said Velline. “People are also looking for ways to be greener but they the want data on the receipts so email is a logical solution.”

To make use of Wells Fargo’s e-mail ATM receipt option, customers must be signed up for online Banking with Wells Fargo. The e-mails will then be sent to the customer’s e-mail account with an attachment or to Wells Fargo’s secure online inbox.

Velline said that the feature would be made available to the rest of the Bay Area in the spring and would likely go nationwide later  this year.
