NHTSA May Looking into Unintended Acceleration Issues in Ford Fusion & Mercury Milan (NYSE: F)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will be opening an investigation into a possible problem with floor-mat interference on 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models.

The investigation rings of déjà-vu coming just months after Toyota faced a similar investigation from the NHTSA which suggested that floor mats in the vehicles may cause the accelerator pedal to stick.

The new investigation of the Fusion and Milan models involves some 249,301 vehicles.

The NHTSA said in a statement: “The safety agency is opening a formal investigation to examine allegations of the pedals becoming trapped in the depressed position after the driver releases the pedal to decelerate. NHTSA has verified three consumer complaints concerning the MY 2010 Fusion.”

The NHTSA suggested that owners do not place any unsecured floor mats into the driver’s side foot well.
