BP Gives $75 Million in Grants to Alabama, Florida & Mississippi (NYSE: BP)

BP PLC (NYSE: BP) said that it will give $75 million worth of grants to Alabama, Florida and Mississippi as the states respond to the worst oil spill in America’s history.

BP COO Doug Suttles said in a statement on Thursday his company was making the funds available to the three states after their governors requested the funds.

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour said that the grant will provide for additional protection in certain environmentally sensitive areas of his state’s coast. The money will also make it so that Mississippi does not have to use its own money to repel the oil spill.

The Gulf oil spill began on April 20th after an oil rig exploded off the Gulf of Mexico, which killed 11 workers on the rig. The federal government believes that around nearly 1 million gallons of oil are leaking per day.
