The 8 Biggest Revenue Hospitals in the Country

539Because we don’t have a free government led healthcare service in this country, our hospitals run more like businesses, and thus some make more money than others. How much money a hospital makes can be down to number of patients, services, quality of specializations, and quality of the doctors; doctors with advanced PHDs, MDs and Masters of Public Health. Thisis the list of the US hospitals with the biggest revenue.

For the full 100 list, see Becker’s Hospital Review.

  1. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Presbyterian — $11.87 billion

The behemoth of an institution was founded in 1893, making it one of the oldest hospitals on this list. This is a bit misleading, as the UPMC doesn’t just have one hospital, but 21 different sites spread out over the planet, which contributes to its extreme revenue. It currently employs over 60,000 employees and is placed in the top ten for 6 different medical specialties.

  1. Cleveland Clinic — $10.51 billion

This academic hospital was founded in 1921 and has locations in two other states as well as one in Canada and one in the Middle East. It is ranked in the top 3 for 9 different specializations making it one of America’s best hospitals.

  1. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (LA) — $9.40 billion

Known as an ‘Academic Health Science Centre’ Cedars-Sinai was founded in 1902 and is the first hospital on our list that is situated in just the one state, making its massive revenue all the more impressive.

  1. Florida Hospital Orlando — $8.81 billion

With all the old people in Florida, you’d need a really good hospital. Founded in 1908 this hospital has 25 different locations spread all over the state and they specialize in emergency care. Just don’t let the fact that it’s owned by a church, put you off.

  1. Stanford Hospital (California) — $8.55 billion

Another academic hospital, however this one is more modern, having been founded in 1968 and is thus the most modern on the list. The hospital had become famous for its many medical breakthroughs in the treatments of cancer, heart disease and neurological disorders.

  1. New York-Presbyterian Hospital — $8.37 billion

A university hospital with two distinct locations: one related to Cornell University and the other with Columbia. The original hospital which has now evolved to this modern incarnation was founded in 1771, which is probably as old as anything in this country can possibly get. It is the best hospital in the NY metropolitan area and one of the biggest hospitals in the US with nearly 2,500 beds.

  1. Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) — $7.41 billion

Another one for the ‘really old’ category, this teaching hospital was founded in 1874 and is located in the university area of West Philadelphia. It was recently ranked 9th on the list of best US hospitals. This university hospital is actually the oldest of its kind in America.

  1. Montefiore Medical Center – Moses Division Hospital (NY) — $6.96 billion

Our second New York based hospital, this time in the Bronx. Founded in 1884, this teaching hospital’s founding fathers were the key leaders of New York’s Jewish community and it is currently ranked as the 15th best hospital in New York, which sounds low, but it’s obviously doing something right to have a revenue stream of nearly 7 billion.
