Ford Motor Co (NYSE: F) has become the first auto manufacturer to join the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Water Disclosure, a project that measures companies’ water usage, water risks and water management plans of their operations as well as their supply chains.
The Carbon Disclosure Project established a reporting framework used by 2,500 of the world’s largest companies to report carbon emissions. The Water Disclosure initiative extends the project by helping companies better manage the world’s shrinking fresh water resources.
“Water scarcity is quickly becoming a critical global issue with significant social and environmental implications and all of us need to be part of the solution,” said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice-president of sustainability, environment and safety engineering.
Ford is helping shape the questionnaire that will serve as a protocol for water reporting as a founding participant in the project.
Ten years ago, Ford created its own voluntary global water management initiative, which included water conservation, re-use of storm water and process water and water quality management. Between 2000 and 2008, Ford cut its global water usage by 56%.
