Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) to Release Chrome OS Before Holiday Season

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) plans on releasing its browser-based operating system, Chrome OS, sometime this fall, perhaps in time for the holiday shopping system, according to a report from the Register.

Sundar Pichai, a vice president of product management at Google, speaking at the Computex conference over the weekend, said that his company’s rival to Windows would arrive sometime later this year, but did not provide a specific date.

Pichai’s statements are in line with previous statements made by Google about its release date.

Last month, Google released a beta version of a software development kit for Google Chrome’s browser which will allow developers to create applications to work with Chrome OS.

Google first announced that it was creating an operating system initially for netbooks in July 2009, which at the time, Google said that Chrome OS would land during the second half of 2010.
