Citigroup Vice Chairman to Step Down after 53 Year Career (NYSE: C)

Citigroup (NYSE: C) Senior Vice Chairman William Rhodes, who began his career with Citigroup more than 53 years ago will stop down at the end of April.

Rhodes, now age 74, will leave his primary role but will remain a senior adviser in the company, reporting to CEO Vikram Pandit.

During his career at Citigroup, Rhodes as served as the company’s senior international officer, and has helped the bank expand into Central and Eastern Europe, as well as China, the company said in a statement. Mr. Rhodes joined Citigroup in 1957 after graduating from Brown University and headed a committee of international lenders that negotiated debt restructurings for several countries including Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

In his retirement, Rhodes says that he will continue to advocate for free trade, specifically free trade agreements with Korea, Colombia and Panama through the use of op-ed article and his work at Brown.

Rhodes’s departure from Citigroup will allow him to spend more time at the William R. Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance at Brown, to which he donated $10 million in 2007. Rhodes has helped the center attract noted faculty such as former Chilean president Ricardo Lagos, appointed professor-at-large in 2007.
