Prosper Marketplace Earns “D+” Rating from Better Business Bureau

Prosper Marketplace, a popular peer-to-peer lending company, has earned a disappointing rating of “D+” by the Better Business Bureau.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) rates companies based on a number of factors, including length of operations, complaints against a company, government actions against a company, truth in advertising issues and a  company’s responsiveness to complaints against them.

Prosper Marketplace, often referred to as Prosper.com, has received the rating from the Better Business Bureau because of a high number of complaints against the company and the company’s relative newness in the marketplace. According to the BBB’s listing on Prosper, the organization received 43 complaints about Prosper Marketplace.

The BBB listing also says that the “Length of time business has been operating” was also a contributing factor. Prosper has been in business since 2006.

Out of the 43 complaints that were filed against the company with the Better Business Bureau, 23 of them were customer service or service issues. An additional 6 of the complaints contended that there were issues in the company’s advertising and 8 of the complaints were related to the company’s billing.

To Prosper’s credit, the company has resolved or claimed to resolve the 33 issues that were stated against the company to the Better Business Bureau. Out of the 43 complaints, 10 were closed by the Better Business Bureau saying that Prosper Marketplace had not satisfactorily solved the issues. Prosper claims to have resolved the other 33 cases.

Out of the 33 cases that were resolved, only 11 of them were confirmed by the customer filing the complaint that the issue was resolved. With the other 22 complaints, Prosper.com stated that they had resolved the issues, but the customer had not reported to the BBB that they had or had not received satisfaction from the company.
